The following checks should be made with the engine cold, as resistance will be greater when hot. First, remove the ignition coil pack. Check the primary resistance of the ignition coil by turning the ignition key to OFF, disconnecting the electrical connector from each coil, and connecting an ohmmeter across the coil primary terminals, comparing the measurement to the specified resistance; if incorrect, replace the coil. Next, check the secondary resistance of each ignition coil by turning the ignition key to OFF, labeling and detaching the spark plug wires from each coil, connecting an ohmmeter across the two secondary terminals of each coil, and comparing the measurement to the specified resistance; if incorrect, replace the coil. For non-turbo models, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the upper intake manifold, label and disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil while paying attention to their routing for reinstallation, disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector, remove the ignition coil mounting bolts, and take out the coil pack from the valve cover, with installation being the reverse of removal. For turbo models, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the throttle control shield, disconnect the accelerator cable and, if equipped, the cruise control cable from the throttle lever, remove the accelerator cable bracket, disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil pack, disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil pack, remove the ignition coil mounting bolts (twisting the coil to access two of the bolts), and pull the coil pack up and out on the throttle body side of the air intake plenum, with installation being the reverse of removal.

On 2.4L Four-cylinder models, disconnect the battery cable, label, disconnect spark plug wires, disconnect the electrical connector, remove mounting bolts, and remove the coil pack. For V6 models, disconnect the battery cable, and disengage the accelerator, and remove the power steering reservoir mounting bolts.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. You may remove the distributor for ease, but it's optional. Take off the distributor cap and rotor. Use a trigger wheel puller tool to remove the trigger wheel, using a flat washer to protect the inner shaft. Remove the pin, pickup coil assembly retainer, and washers. Take out the two pickup coil plate screws and lift the pickup coil assembly. Reinstall the pickup coil assembly, ensuring the pin fits into the vacuum advance mechanism link hole. Secure it with the washers and retainer. Position the wiring harness in the distributor housing slot. Reinstall the two pickup coil plate screws. Install the trigger wheel, ensuring the long teeth face up. Use a pin punch and hammer to tap the pin into the trigger wheel and shaft groove. Reinstall the rotor and distributor cap. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Disengage the accelerator and cruise control cables from the clip on the power steering fluid reservoir. Remove the power steering reservoir mounting bolts and loosen the lower mounting nut. Lift up the power steering reservoir and set it aside. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil pack. Remove the ignition coil mounting nuts. Remove the ignition coil pack and disconnect the electrical connector from the coil. Installation is the reverse of removal.

For a Direct Ignition System (DIS) coil pack on 3.3L and 3.8L engines, start by labeling the six spark plug wires and measuring the resistance of each cable. It should be 3 to 12 k-ohms per foot of cable, replacing any cable not within this range. Remove the four coil pack mounting bolts, lift up the coil pack, and unplug the electrical connector.

To replace the ignition coil on 2000 through 2006 four-cylinder and 2007 through 2011 models, locate the coil pack and mark the spark plug wires if necessary. Remove the air intake duct on four-cylinder models, then disconnect the wires from the coil pack and remove the mounting bolts. Detach the coil from its bracket and reverse the steps for installation.

Start by removing the ignition coil(s). Clean the outer case and check for any damage or cracks. Clean the coil primary terminals and remove any corrosion with a wire brush. Next, check the coil primary resistance by connecting the ohmmeter leads to the two primary coil terminals. Repeat this step for each coil. Then, check the coil secondary resistance by connecting one ohmmeter lead to a coil primary terminal and the other lead to the spark plug terminal. Repeat this step for each coil. Compare the measurements to the specified resistance values and replace the ignition coil(s) if necessary. To replace the coil, remove the air inlet duct/resonator if necessary. Disconnect the electrical connector and clean the area surrounding the ignition coil(s) with compressed air. Remove the nut from the ignition coil mounting stud and carefully pull the coil up with a twisting motion. Finally, remove the coil from the engine compartment and install the new coil in reverse order.
