The entire instrument panel must be removed to access the heater/air conditioning unit. On models with air conditioning, the system must be discharged and recovered. The battery cable should be disconnected, and the cooling system drained. The heater hoses at the firewall should be disconnected and taped or plugged. For models with air conditioning, the accumulator, mounting bracket, and air conditioning lines must be detached. The nut securing the air conditioning/heater unit to the firewall should be removed. The instrument panel should be removed, and the accumulator at the firewall should be removed to access the nuts securing the HVAC housing. The straps securing the instrument panel to the top of the HVAC housing should be disconnected. Inside the vehicle, the electrical connector from the blower motor resistor should be disconnected, along with the electrical connector and vacuum hoses from the heater/air conditioning unit. The air conditioning/heater unit mounting nuts in the passenger compartment floor area should be removed. The heater/air conditioning unit can then be removed from the interior of the vehicle. If equipped, the two heater core retaining screws should be removed, and the four retaining tabs should be released to lift the heater core out from the heater/air conditioning unit.
