Q: How Difficult is Heater Core Removal for Home Mechanics?
A: Heater core removal is a challenging task for home mechanics. The entire instrument panel must be removed to access the heater/air conditioning unit. The battery cable should be disconnected, and the cooling system drained. The heater hoses at the firewall should be disconnected and taped or plugged. The straps securing the instrument panel to the top of the HVAC housing should be disconnected. Inside the vehicle, the electrical connector from the Blower Motor resistor should be disconnected, along with the electrical connector and vacuum hoses from the heater/air conditioning unit. The heater/air conditioning unit can then be removed from the interior of the vehicle. For installation, the heater core should be positioned in the housing and the screws should be installed.
