    Q:
How do you remove the front and rear driveaxles on Dodge Avenger? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the front axle shaft, start by setting the parking brake and removing the front wheel cover or hubcap. Loosen the axle shaft/hub nut and wheel lug nuts, but don't remove them yet. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the lug nuts and the wheel. Next, remove the brake caliper and disc, supporting the caliper to protect the brake hose. Remove the two steering knuckle-to-strut bracket bolts and separate the strut from the steering knuckle, taking note of the cam bolt position for wheel alignment. Remove the axle shaft/hub nut and pull the steering knuckle out and away from the outer CV joint of the axle shaft, striking the stub shaft if necessary. Retrieve the washer from the stub shaft and replace the axle shaft/hub nut. To disengage the inner CV joint from the transaxle, support the outer end of the axle shaft, insert a prybar between the inner CV joint and the transaxle case, and pry it out sharply. On models with a passenger's side intermediate shaft, use a prybar to disengage the inner CV joint from the intermediate shaft bearing. Carefully withdraw the inner CV joint from the transaxle, being cautious not to damage the sealing lip of the axle shaft oil seal. For the rear axle shaft removal, begin by setting the parking brake and removing the rear wheel cover or hubcap. Loosen, but don't remove, the axle shaft/hub nut. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, placing the shift selector lever in Neutral. Remove the rear differential assembly from the vehicle. Then, remove the axle shaft/hub nut and pull the axle shaft from the hub and bearing assembly towards the center of the vehicle. If needed, strike the end of the stub shaft with a soft-faced hammer to separate the splines from the hub and bearing assembly. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring thorough cleaning of splines and sealing surfaces, applying multi-purpose grease as needed, and sharply seating the snap-ring on the inner CV joint stub shaft into its groove in the differential gears or rear differential gears. Tighten the axle shaft/hub nut and lug nuts to complete the process.
