Measure the lobe height of each cam lobe, both intake and exhaust, and check for discoloration, scoring, chipping, pitting, or uneven wear on the camshaft lobes.

Before removing the camshaft, check the endplay with a dial indicator and record the movement.

Inspect the rocker arm pivot area and shaft for wear, cracks, and galling, and replace any worn or damaged rocker arms or shafts.

Use a socket and ratchet attached to the crankshaft pulley bolt, and rotate the engine in a clockwise direction until the cam lobe for the rocker arm to be removed is located on its base circle.

The upper intake manifold and the valve cover(s) need to be removed.

Lubricate the shafts and reinstall them in their marked order, ensuring that intake rockers remain on the intake shaft and exhaust rockers on the exhaust shaft, with notches in the rocker arm shafts facing up to prevent damage.

Before starting, if the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning and you plan to remove the camshaft with the engine in place, have the air conditioning system discharged by a professional.

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the battery.
