Chrysler Cirrus Fuel Pump

The Fuel Pump in Chrysler Cirrus cars is employed to pumping fuel from the tank to the carburetor or the fuel injectors of the vehicle's engine. Carbureted models use a low-pressure externally mounted mechanical pump while fuel-injected models use electric pumps installed within the tank and deliver high pressure for performance. In the past both mechanical and electric fuel pumps have been used but nowadays electric fuel pumps are quite popular because they are safe and efficient. Electronic fuel injection systems usually involve electric pump with better control from an electronic control unit and these are made to run under various loads. Change of mechanical pumps to electric pumps depicts a change in technology to improved performance of the Chrysler Cirrus Fuel Pump system.

A: For any reason the fuel pump module is disassembled, then it is essential to always change the O-ring seal. The fuel pump module has the fuel pump, Fuel Pressure Regulator, Fuel Inlet Strainer, an Fuel Level Sending Unit. First, do the fuel pressure relief procedure and, second, remove the negative cable from the remote battery terminal. Take out the Fuel Tank of the vehicle and wash the top and around the fuel pump module to eschew any kind of pollution. With the help of a large pair of pliers, it is necessary to unthread the fuel pump module ring nut in which it is forbidden to apply pressure in order to avoid a terrible consequence. During extraction of the fuel pump module, from the tank turn it slightly to avoid breaking the fuel level sending unit float arm and the ring seal should be disposed. As for the fuel pump, it is electric and non-serviceable; if it dies, then the whole unit has to go, the fuel inlet strainer, the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel level sending unit are replaceable. For installation, remove the sealing area on the fuel tank, get hold of a new fuel pump module O-ring seal, lightly oil it with clean engine oil and fit it over the foil end of the fuel tank. Slowly place the fuel pump module into the fuel tank with the tab going into the notch of the fuel tank. While the module is in position, firmly fix the ring nut in place but do not tighten it excessively in order to eliminate leakage. The remaining installation steps are of course the reverse of the removal steps.
