Chrysler Town & Country A/C Accumulator

This post deals with the A/C Accumulator, which is a crucial component of an automotive air conditioning system of Chrysler Town & Country vehicles. Its main use being that of a wick, which helps to remove moisture and debris and avoid sludge formation that could cause system failure. The A/C Accumulator is found in two key components: the receiver drier is situated on the high pressure liquid line while the accumulator is placed between the evaporator and the compressor. Chrysler Town & Country for the past years have employed two major types of the A/C Accumulator, the accumulator type and the receiver drier type which though accomplish the identical functions but they are positioned in diverse segments of the A/C system. Replacing these components is important usually and even more importantly after major A/C services to maintain performance and prevent such things as leakage or odd gauge. The capacity of the A/C Accumulator to retain moisture is relatively small and that is why it is necessary to change it in time to preserve the operation of the Chrysler Town & Country's air conditioning.

Chrysler Town & Country A/C Accumulator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Receiver-Drier in an R-134a System on Chrysler Town & Country?
A: When replacing entire components, additional refrigerant oil must be added equal to the amount that is removed with the component being replaced. Be sure to read the label on the oil container to verify that it is compatible with the R-134a system before adding any of it to the system. Have the system discharged and the refrigerant recovered by an air conditioning technician. Remove the air filter housing. Remove both line fittings from the A/C accumulator. Plug all openings immediately to prevent contamination. Remove the mounting fasteners retaining the A/C accumulator bracket to the shock tower. Note the position of the ground strap (if equipped). Remove the A/C accumulator. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to install new O-rings onto the line fittings and lightly coat them with the correct refrigerant oil. Only use O-rings that are designed specifically for A/C system applications. If you are replacing the A/C accumulator with a new unit, add 0.8-ounce (25 ml) of refrigerant oil to the replacement. Have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
