The ignition coils in a four-cylinder engine are housed in the coil pack, with coils '1' providing voltage to cylinder one and four, and '2' to cylinders two and three. The first step as described will involve identification of the spark plug cables then removal of the coil pack cables and lastly; removal of the primary wiring electrical connector. Check the amount of primary resistance of each coil with an ohmmeter between the center terminal and each outer terminal, record the readings, and compare with the specifications; if the resistance differs, then change the coil. Next, use the ohmmeter and connect the two terminals by switching the spark plug wire to terminal 1 and repeat on terminals 2 and 3 and compare to specifications and if fails, replace the coil. Last but not the least, reconnect the spark plug wires back and reconnect the primary wiring electrical connector. To work on V6 engines, first, you need to take out the air cleaner assembly as well as the EGR tube; you also need to remove each spark plug wire from the distributor cap but before you do so label them. Take out the distributor cap screwed and undo the primary wiring electrical connector. Check the coil primary resistance with the probe between the terminals of the two-pin connector; if the actual resistance is not within the specifications, replace the whole distributor as the coil is non-repairable. Check coil secondary resistance between coil hi-tension tower terminal and both terminals of two pin connector and replace the distributor if it falls in the above said range. Replace the distributor cap and its parts in a backward manner as listed above. In four-cylinder engines for removal, label and remove spark plug wires, disconnect the primary wiring electrical connector, remove the coil pack mounting nuts and lift the coil pack off the valve cover, while for reinstallation the procedures is the reverse of the above. For V6 engines, if the ignition coil is bad, it's impossible to replace a single component; the distributor will have to be substituted.

First of all, check the ignition coil's primary and secondary resistance with a cold engine. If the primary resistance is incorrect, replace the coil. Replace the coil if the secondary resistance is incorrect. To replace, disconnect the negative battery cable, label and disconnect the spark plug wires, disconnect the ignition coil connector, remove the mounting bolts, and remove the coil pack. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector. Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts and remove the coil pack from the valve cover. Installation is the reverse of removal.

To replace the ignition coil on 2000 through 2006 four-cylinder and 2007 through 2011 models, locate the coil pack and mark the spark plug wires if necessary. Remove the air intake duct on four-cylinder models, then disconnect the wires from the coil pack and remove the mounting bolts. Detach the coil from its bracket and reverse the steps for installation.

Start by removing the ignition coil unit. Clean the outer case and check for any damage or cracks. Clean the coil primary terminals and remove any corrosion with a wire brush. Next, check the coil primary resistance by connecting the ohmmeter leads to the outer terminals and the center terminal. Repeat this step for each coil. Then, check the coil secondary resistance by connecting one ohmmeter lead to the no. 1 terminal and the other lead to the no. 4 terminal. Repeat this step for each coil. Compare the measurements to the specified resistance values and replace the ignition coil unit if necessary. To replace the coil, remove the air filter housing and outlet hose. Mark the spark plug wires for proper firing order and remove them from the ignition coil. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil pack mounting bolts. Finally, remove the coil from the engine compartment and install the new coil in reverse order.

Remove the pickup coil assembly retainer and washers.

To check the coil's primary resistance, attach the leads of an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals. To check the secondary resistance, hook one ohmmeter lead to a primary terminal and the other lead to the large center (high-tension) terminal. If the measured resistances are not as specified, the coil is likely defective and should be replaced.
