Q: How Do You Remove and Install a Steering Column?
A: To remove the steering column, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and disconnecting the battery. Remove the Steering Wheel, lower instrument panel trim, and steering column covers. Take out the airbag system clockspring and multi-function switch. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, detach the shift interlock cable from the key lock cylinder housing. Mark the relationship of the steering shaft lower universal joint to the steering gear input shaft, then remove the retainer pin and unscrew the pinch bolt. Separate the universal joint from the steering gear input shaft. Finally, remove the steering column mounting nuts and guide the column out from the instrument panel. To install the steering column, guide it into position and connect the U-joint with the steering gear input shaft. Install the mounting nuts and tighten them. Install the bolt through the U-joint and tighten it. Complete the installation by following the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring the airbag clockspring is centered when installing the steering wheel and tightening the steering wheel bolt.
