Dodge Avenger Engine Cooling Fan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Cooling Fan on My Dodge Avenger?
A: If the engine is overheating and the cooling fan is not coming on when the engine temperature rises to an excessive level, check the fan relays in the underhood fuse/relay box. If the relays are okay, check all wiring and connections to the fan motor. If no obvious problems are found, the problem could be the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Have the cooling fan system and circuit diagnosed by a dealer service department or repair shop with the proper diagnostic equipment. To replace the cooling fan, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Set the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connector and harness retaining pins. On 2011 and later models, remove the fasteners holding the wire loom to the upper radiator core support. Remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator. On 2011 and later models, remove the oil dipstick tube to make room for fan removal. Remove the upper clips and fasteners holding the fan assembly to the radiator. On later models, remove the fan shroud mounting bolts. Remove the cooling fan assembly by pulling it straight up and out of the engine compartment. Installation is the reverse of removal. Place the fan assembly back into the retaining clips for the side and bottom. Refill the cooling system.
