Dodge Neon Camshaft Position Sensor

The Camshaft Position Sensor of automobiles particularly the Dodge Neon models is an important mechanism that determines the position and the rate of the camshaft. What is more, it is sent to the engine control module (ECM) to manage fuel injectors and ignition time to allow the optimum performance of the engine. Usually the Dodge Neon Camshaft Position Sensor is located just above the camshaft, however, the location might differ according to the model. Through the years various types of Camshaft Position Sensors were installed in the Dodge Neon cars, primarily together with crank sensors to premier synchronize the position of the engine pistons and valves. This pairing is particularly crucial to engines with variable valve timing as it results to accurate fuel injection timing. Camshaft Position Sensor is a critical component, even minor problem with the sensor affects the performance of Dodge Neon tremendously.

Dodge Neon Camshaft Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you disconnect and replace the CMP sensor on Dodge Neon?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable. The CMP sensor is located on the left end of the cylinder head; to release the locking tab on the CMP sensor electrical connector, push it out toward the firewall. If necessary, move the brake booster hose and any electrical wires out of the way to access the CMP sensor. Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector. Remove the CMP sensor retaining bolts to detach the CMP sensor from the cylinder head, and then remove the CMP sensor. Remove the Torx bolt that attaches the target magnet to the camshaft to detach the CMP sensor target magnet from the end of the camshaft, and then remove the target magnet. When installing the target magnet, ensure that the locating dowels on the back of the magnet are aligned with the machined locating holes in the end of the camshaft, and tighten the target magnet retaining screw to the specified torque. If planning to install the old CMP sensor, inspect the O-ring on the sensor mounting plate; if it's cracked, torn, or deteriorated, replace it. If installing a new CMP sensor, ensure a new O-ring is already installed. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal, and be sure to tighten the CMP sensor retaining bolts to the specified torque.
