The catalytic converter requires little maintenance, but should be inspected whenever the vehicle is raised on a lift or if the exhaust system is checked or serviced. During inspection, all connections in the exhaust pipe assembly should be checked for looseness and damage, as well as the clamps for damage, cracks, and missing fasteners. The rubber hangers should also be checked for cracks. The converter itself should be checked for damage and dents that could affect performance and be hazardous to health. The heat shields under the converter and the heat insulator above it should also be inspected for damage and loose fasteners.

If component replacement is necessary, it is important to wait until the complete exhaust system is cool before attempting to remove the catalytic converter. The vehicle should be raised and securely supported on jackstands, and penetrating oil should be applied to the clamp bolts. After several minutes, the bolts and rubber hangers can be removed, and the converter can be separated from the exhaust pipe. Any old gaskets stuck to the pipes should be removed. During installation, new exhaust pipe gaskets should be used, and the clamp nuts should be tightened to the specified torque. Finally, the engine should be started and carefully checked for exhaust leaks.
