    Q:
How to replace a drive axle boot and Axle Shaft on Dodge Magnum? Posted by Customer
    A:
If a Axle Shaft boot has failed, the entire shaft assembly must be replaced as boots are not serviceable separately. To remove, start by removing the wheel cover or hub cap and break the Axle Shaft/hub nut loose with a socket and large breaker bar. Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel. Remove the Axle Shaft/hub nut and discard it. Drain the gear lubricant from the differential. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential and remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler. Pry the inner CV joint out of the differential just far enough to release the snap-ring. The Axle Shaft can't be removed from the differential until the differential has been lowered. Support the differential with a floor jack. Remove the mounting fasteners securing the differential to the crossmember and differential mount. Carefully lower the differential enough to separate the Axle Shaft(s) from the differential. Pull the Axle Shaft out of the hub flange. If it sticks, tap it out with a soft-faced hammer. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: Remove the rubber isolation washer from the outer CV joint stub shaft and inspect it. Replace it if necessary. Tighten the differential mounting bolts to the torque. Install a new Axle Shaft/hub nut. Tighten the hub nut securely, but don't try to tighten it to the actual torque specification until you've lowered the vehicle to the ground. Fill the differential with the type and amount of lubricant specified. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to the torque. Tighten the Axle Shaft/hub nut to the torque. Install the wheel cover or hub cap.
