Chrysler Cirrus Distributor

In ignition system the Distributor of Chrysler Cirrus vehicles involve itself by feeding the high voltage current to the spark plugs in proper sequence from ignition coil. Chrysler Cirrus models of the past incorporated a conventional mechanical distributor equipped with breaker points which in turn consists of wear components. Some of these early distributors were fitted with centrifugal and vacuum advance to adjust spark timing with the prevailing engine conditions. Chrysler Cirrus vehicles changed its distributor from mechanical to electronic ones through Hall Effect sensors since the former are more reliable and less require frequent services. This shift enabled the control of spark time very effectively and thus required control and frequent change of ignition timing. Today, although there are still some models of Chrysler Cirrus in the market, the then modern unit has shifted more from distributors and adopted the coil-on-plug that can outperform and even produce more efficiency compared to the distributor system -a advancement of the ignition technology.

Chrysler Cirrus Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and install the distributor on Chrysler Cirrus?
A: To delete the distributor follow the steps below; first unplug the battery negative terminal from the ground stud on the left side shock tower then you remove the air cleaner housing and the EGR pipe. Wipe the surrounding of the transaxle fluid dipstick tube as well as cover the hole for the dipstick with duct tape to minimize the possibility of dirt mixture. Remove electrical connectors from the distributor, number all the spark plug wires according to them position in the distributor cap and then remove the wires from the distributor. Disconnect the spark plug wire routing bracket and unscrew the distributor cap to have it detached from the engine. Slide the rotor tip into the distributor body; after that, loosen the nuts and washers that held the distributor and pull it from the cylinder head. For installation check the distributor O-ring seal and replace it if damaged. Place the rotor on the distributor shaft while the O-ring seal should be lubricated by clean engine oil before it is inserted into the cylinder head and locked into position by tightening the nuts while using the washers. If the engine was rotated while the distributor was removed rotate the engine to Top Dead Center for the number 1 piston, perform a continuity check on the distributor cap to locate the number 1 terminal and mark it. Put the cap onto the distributor and align the distributor body with the number 1 terminal mark then make the previous installation. Last of all, inspect the transaxle dipstick tube o-ring seal to determine if it needs to be replaced, then apply a thin layer of clean transaxle fluid before installation of the new tube, apply new gasket on the EGR then tighten the bolt to factory recommended torque.
